The basis of Swedish massage is the manipulation of the superficial layers of muscles and soft tissues for therapeutic purposes. It is designed to enhance oxygen flow in the blood, release toxins from muscles, induce relaxation, enhance flexibility, and boost circulation. Depending on the pressure applied and the various techniques used, Swedish massage affects the skin, muscles, blood vessels, lymphatic system, and the nervous system.

Shiatsu is a meditative healing art that honors the body, mind and spirit.
Shiatsu, a Japanese word that translates as "finger pressure", is a form of bodywork which incorporates aspects from traditional Chinese medicine, including observation, questioning, and touching, combined with the understanding that human health is achieved by balancing Yin and Yang.
The system is based on the belief that disease arises out of an imbalance between Yin and Yang. Shiatsu aims to rectify imbalances by working on the flow of life energy, known as qi or chi, which circulates around the body through channels called meridians. Qi must be kept flowing freely through the body to ensure balance. Shiatsu stimulates acupoints, which are located at specific areas along the channels, through the rhythmic application of pressure, stretching, and holding techniques. This regulates the flow of qi, and is thought to improve the overall function of the organs, increase lymphatic flow, which stregthens the body's resistance to disease, boosts circulation, releases muscle tension, and promotes a sense of relaxation.
